The College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks applicants for the position of program director for the Bachelor of Science in Cardio-Respiratory Care (BS-CRC) degree program in the Department of Respiratory and Surgical Technologies.  The program and department are located at the UAMS central campus in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Salary and academic rank are commensurate with qualifications and college promotion and tenure criteria.

Position Summary

The program director will report directly to the chair of the Department of Respiratory and Surgical Technologies to manage and lead the BS-CRC program.  Working in conjunction with the department chair, staff, and program faculty, the program director will be responsible for all aspects of the degree program, both administrative and educational.  Administrative aspects include fiscal planning, continuous review and analysis, planning and development, and the overall effectiveness of the program.  Educational responsibilities include teaching, curriculum development and review, etc.  The position is a 12-month, full-time position.  Appointment to the tenure track is negotiable and contingent on candidate’s preparation and experience.


  1. Teaching – Plan and deliver instruction; remain current in academic or professional discipline; maintain an active program of scholarship appropriate to the mission of the program, as well as the program director’s interests, abilities, and career trajectory.
  2. Management – Effectively manage program resources: human, fiscal, and physical; organize self and the program to accomplish goals and objectives; allocate duties and responsibilities to meet the program’s needs; communicate effectively orally and in writing; maintain accurate program records; plan and conduct program meetings; assure efficient and effective business processes in the program; monitor and evaluate program performance; adhere to and enforce policies; maintain program compliance with accreditation standards.
  3. Leadership – Articulate long-term direction and vision for the program in accord with the department’s mission; engage faculty and staff to assure curriculum quality and currency; foster a program culture of collegiality, collaboration, and trust; promote and demonstrate innovation and resourcefulness; seek and promotion partnerships within the department, college, university, and community; advocate for the program and profession; represent the program at all levels: college, university, community, national, and international; adhere to the highest standards of professional and personal ethics; keep faculty, staff, and students informed of important external factors that may impact on the program; create a culture that promotes scholarly activity among faculty and students.
  4. Faculty and Staff Development – Mentor and counsel faculty and staff to promote personal and professional development; Identify and allocate resources for faculty and staff development; recruit and select faculty and staff; evaluate personnel performance and provide meaningful feedback and guidance; promote, mentor, model, and lead scholarly activity; demonstrate and provide guidance to achieve excellence in teaching.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Academic leadership including the ability to motivate faculty and staff to achieve program goals and objectives
  • Knowledge of current, emerging, and future trends in respiratory care
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Understanding of budget management, planning, and assessment processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in respiratory care, education, or a related discipline
  • Valid Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential and licensure in Arkansas, or eligible for licensure
  • Four years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, with at least two years in clinical respiratory care
  • Two years’ experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in education or related discipline, or willingness to pursue a doctoral degree
  • Previous experience as a program director
  • Experience in conducting and teaching scholarly activities
  • Experience in the use of contemporary educational methods, e.g., hybrid courses, online instruction, simulation, interprofessional education, etc.
