Technical Standards

The technical standards outlined below are the physical, cognitive and behavioral abilities required for students to successfully complete the Radiologic Imaging Sciences Program.  These requirements must be met by all students, with or without reasonable accommodations, entering the program.

In order to fulfill the requirements of the Radiologic Imaging Sciences Program, students must possess the following abilities:

Motor and Sensory

Efficiently move from room to room and maneuver in small spaces for at least 4 hours at a time while actively engaged in radiographic procedures;  Push and move stretchers and wheelchairs with patients; Pull and move patients of various sizes and physical conditions to and from radiographic tables; Lift/carry and attach extra radiographic equipment utilizing good body mechanics; Push heavy mobile radiographic equipment throughout the hospital; Lift 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds or more occasionally; Perform precise patient care procedures (IV, sterile gloving, blood pressure assessment, etc.); Reach up to 6′ with the use of a step stool, if needed, to manipulate equipment; Palpate external body landmarks to precisely line up radiographic tube; Accurately select technical factors on a control panel and observe data and technical results utilizing visual abilities in minimal lighting; Respond to audible sounds of radiographic equipment; Hear instructions in a variety of situations, such as a darkened x-ray room, trauma room in the emergency department and in surgery where persons may not be facing you or may be wearing surgical masks.

Communication

Communicate in writing and verbally in a clear and concise manner, utilizing adequate English, with other healthcare providers; Ability to recognize non-verbal communication cues from patients; Communicate with patients in order to obtain an appropriate medical history and provide patients with a clear and complete explanation of the procedure.

Behavioral and Social

Possess the emotional maturity and stability to approach highly stressful situations in a calm and rational manner; Adhere to high ethical standards of conduct as well as applicable state and federal laws.

Intellectual

Utilize critical thinking skills; Interpret data, select technical factors on a control panel and evaluate the technical results on a radiographic image; Interpret radiographic requests; Assess patient needs.
