The college’s annual scholarship reception November 7th featured two scholarships given out for the first time with the first-year Physician Assistant program. The first Ruth M. Allen, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship went to Latifeh Shafii while Antonia Hudson received the first Arkansas Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association Scholarship.

CHP Dean Douglas Murphy, Ph.D., called the growing number of scholarships in the college an endorsement that the college has quality education programs that are producing quality graduates.

Dental hygiene student Gina Mayfield was recipient of the college’s Neal and Clara Spain Endowed Scholarship.

“The College of Health Professions is proud of students getting a boost toward rewarding careers through scholarships,” Murphy said. “We also appreciate the donors, who see our college as a worthwhile investment in the future of health care.”

Jeanne Heard, M.D., Ph.D., UAMS provost, praised scholarships as a recruitment tool for the college and UAMS. Scholarships also promote diversity in the student body, often offering access to higher education for students who may not have otherwise been able to afford it.

“For the College of Health Professions and UAMS, a thriving scholarship program attracts the best and brightest students. A strong scholarship program can be a recruitment advantage for students, for new faculty and for the community,” Heard said. “For those whose gifts make these scholarships possible — like those responsible for endowing the scholarships — they create an enduring legacy of support for this college, for higher education and for health care. Their support will produce generations of health care professionals.”
