What is a cytologist?
Cytologists are highly trained laboratory professionals who perform microscopic evaluations of cellular samples from various body sites to detect changes associated with cancer and precancerous lesions, infectious agents and inflammatory processes.

There is currently a nationwide shortage of cytologists and students typically receive several opportunities of employment upon graduation. Starting salaries vary per region with an average starting salary of $70,000.
How long is the Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program?
The Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program is a 12-month program starting in August of each year and consisting of three semesters (fall, spring and summer).

What hours will I be in attendance at school while enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program?
From August through April, normal classroom hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with Fridays being reserved for special projects and other UAMS requirements. From April through July, clinical hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Can I work while attending the Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program?
We recommend that students not work, if at all possible, due to the heavy academic and clinical demands of the Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program
If I am past the traditional college age, am I too old to enter laboratory medicine?
There is no age requirement for the laboratory medicine profession. Student ages vary, but all students in the Bachelor of Science in Cytology Program must be able to meet the Technical Standards.
