The Sonographer
Diagnostic medical sonography is a specialized area of diagnostic imaging and the diagnostic medical sonographer is an integral part of the health care team. Diagnostic medical sonography is a specialized, non-invasive technique that utilizes high frequency ultrasound waves with appropriate detectors and display apparatus to produce diagnostic images of internal organs and structures.
The diagnostic medical sonographer provides patient services using sonographic equipment in consultation with the physician. The sonographer assists the physician in gathering pertinent anatomical, physiological, and/or pathological sonographic data and images necessary to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases.
Sonographers must demonstrate a high degree of motivation and good judgment and be able to work independently. The sonographer must work well with other health care professionals in providing quality service to the patient and must demonstrate empathy and ethical behavior in the practice of the profession.
Benefits of Our Degree Program
The Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program prepares entry-level sonographers with the necessary psychomotor, affective and cognitive skills necessary for a successful career. Through a variety of clinical rotations and rigorous coursework, students learn about diagnostic imaging assessment and how to provide high-quality patient care. Additionally, the program fosters an environment for development of critical thinking, communication skills and professionalism essential for a health care professional.
Importantly, our program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, ensuring it meets the highest educational standards in the classroom and clinical settings. Graduating from a CAAHEP/JRC-DMS accredited program is a prerequisite for most health care facilities that employ diagnostic medical sonographers.
Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities are available throughout the state of Arkansas and the nation in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and industry. Suitably qualified educators, researchers, and administrators are also needed. The national demand for sonographers continues to exceed the supply of graduates. Due to this shortage of well-trained sonographers, some employers are now offering sign-on bonuses and assistance with paying student loans.
Career Outlook
Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2032 in response to the advances in technology and the reliability of sonographic imaging and sonographers for a number of disease processes. The number of older sonographers retiring and an increase in the number of patients needing diagnostic imaging also contributes to the increased demand for diagnostic medical sonographers.
Earnings
The national median hourly rate for diagnostic medical sonographers is approximately $30 to $40. Earnings vary greatly by geographical location, credentials, and experience. Diagnostic medical sonographers may be paid on an hourly, salary or per patient basis. The average starting salary for a new graduate in Arkansas is approximately $60,000 to $65,000 annually.
