Goals and Competencies of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program

The following program goals reflect the mission of UAMS, the UAMS College of Health Professions and the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program. Reflected in the curriculum, the program competencies support the attainment of the program goals.

Didactic Training

Through rigorous, innovative and contemporary education/training, graduates of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be competent, forward-thinking genetic counselors. 

Students in the program will successfully:

  • Complete a didactic curriculum that is aligned with accreditation standards determined by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
  • Participate in a weekly Genetic Counseling Case Conference that focuses on case-based learning, review of the scientific literature, professional issues and peer-teaching.
  • Complete educational enrichment activities to augment their professional development.

Fieldwork Training

Graduates of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program are prepared for the diverse roles that genetic counselors hold in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

Students in the program will successfully:

  • Complete fieldwork experiences that integrate didactic and experiential training to demonstrate attainment of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling practice-based competencies.
  • Contribute to patient-centered genetic counseling both in person and via telehealth.
  • Develop a self-reflective practice and recognize the importance of life-long learning.

Research

Graduates of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program will contribute new knowledge to the profession through research and scholarship. 

Students in the program will successfully:

  • Complete an original research thesis project culminating in a written thesis manuscript and thesis defense.
  • Complete a two-part written comprehensive examination. 

Interprofessional Collaboration

Graduates of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program will possess skills to engage in interprofessional collaboration.

Students in the program will successfully participate in the interprofessional collaboration at the university.
