Passing of Dr. Ronald H. Winters, Ph.D., Dean Emeritus, UAMS College of Health Professions
It is with great sadness that we share with you that Dr. Ronald Winters, dean emeritus of the College of Health Professions, died April 13, 2023 after an extended illness.
Ronald H. Winters, Ph.D., Dean Emeritus, served as Dean of the College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for 28 years from his appointment in 1982 until his retirement in 2011.
Dr. Winters was recognized locally and nationally for his contributions to the field of allied health education; served as an elected officer to numerous national organizations including the Midwest Association of Allied Health Deans at Academic Health Centers, the Southern Association of Allied Health Deans at Academic Health Centers; and the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions.
He was the recipient of the Legacy of Excellence Award from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions and the Dale Bumper’s Area Health Education Centers Leadership Award.
As Dean, the College experienced a 300% growth in student enrollment. Dr. Winters led the development of distance education and online programs in allied health in Arkansas and initiated partnerships with UAMS Area Health Education Centers (now UAMS Regional Programs), the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the Central Arkansas Veteran’s Healthcare System, the Arkansas State University at Mountain Home, and various other institutions across the country through educational consortia in an effort to share resources to achieve maximum quality for students.
Dr. Winters had a long history of service to College and University as Dean and Professor of the College of Health Professions; Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology, UAMS College of Pharmacy; Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, UAMS College of Medicine.
