CHP Courtyard Carnival Draws Students for Fun, Food and Fellowship
The College of Health Professions Courtyard Carnival featured games and fun for students, faculty and staff including a dart toss, ring toss and bean bag throw.
Oct. 28, 2013 | There were radiologic technology students throwing darts to try and pop balloons, dental hygiene students tossing washers and a raucous group of students trying their hand at some karaoke as part of the fun during the second College of Health Professions Courtyard Carnival held Oct. 21.
Benefiting from a sunny and comfortable fall day, hundreds of students from the college’s academic programs filled the college’s large courtyard and surrounding areas for carnival games, entertainment and food. The event built on the success of the first Courtyard Carnival, staged in 2012 to promote collegiality and establish a stronger sense of college identity.

“It’s such a nice way to bring together the students from the different programs who seldom get a change to mingle like this,” said Rhonda Sledge, an assistant professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene who helped out with the washer game.
Katelynn Loftis, a student from England in the diagnostic medical sonography program and president of the college’s student council, helped staff an information table for the group. Her goal was to get more students involved in the student council’s service activities.
“The student council has been a great way to meet new people and get involved in the community,” Loftis said. “We had student council members who volunteered at the Race for the Cure and we’re working to set up other service projects for this year.”

Loftis and Leah Davis, the student council’s vice president and a sonography student from Sherwood, agreed the Courtyard Carnival was a hit.
“You really don’t get to interact as much with those in the other programs,” Davis said.
“It’s nice to get to hang out with students in your own program away from class,” Loftis said.

Elsewhere, students and faculty checked out entries in the college’s mascot contest. The Department of Respiratory and Surgical Technologies, winning for the second year in a row, assembled a mascot with equipment and materials used by many of the college’s programs.
Prize winners included Eva Barlogie, a physician assistant student who won a laptop computer case, Cassie Kist a medical laboratory sciences student, who won a car detailing kit, Aimee Hill, a radiologic imaging sciences student who won an electronic toothbrush, and Ashley Hegwood, a dental hygiene student who won an iPad tablet.
The Department of Respiratory and Surgical Technologies won the college mascot contest with this creation featuring equipment and items representing many of the college’s varied programs, from sonography to repiratory care to physician assistant to dental hygiene.
The volunteer committee that planned this year’s carnival included chair Heather Johnston, administrator for Genetic Counseling and Dietetics and Nutrition, CJ Carrell, from the dean’s office, Tina Crook, Dietetics and Nutrition, Linda Haubenstein, Physician Assistant Studies, Tom Pilgreen, from the dean’s office, Ella Whitney, Imaging and Radiation Sciences, Karen Alford, Emergency Medical Sciences, Tammy Brooks, Imaging and Radiation Sciences, and Bill Woodell, dean’s office. Other faculty and staff members volunteered during the event to serve food, supervise games, staff the check-in table, set up and clean up.
